Kiara Skene

Kiara Skene (they/any) is an emerging theatre director and filmmaker from Adelaide, as at home in the rehearsal room as they once were in the swimming lanes of national competitions. Kiara's journey from elite athlete to emerging creative has been anything but conventional, and they bring that unique drive and vision to every project they touch. Currently in their second-year of a Bachelor of Performance (Directing) at Flinders University Drama Centre, they have already begun to make waves in both theatre and film. Their work has spanned from assisting on 2023 productions of 'Blood Wedding' (dir. Renato Musolino), 'Coming of Age in the 21st Century' (dir. Glenda Linscott), and '[BLANK]' (dir. Tiffany Lyndall-Knight), as well as the creation of shorts films '24 Hours' (2023 48 Hour Film Project), 'Artful Escape', and 'Suck It' (2024). Kiara isn't one to shy away from a challenge, having directed short scenes for '1.5 degrees' as part of the 'Floods of Fire' performance at the 2024 Adelaide Festival. Kiara is currently preparing to debut Suzie Miller's 'Transparency' as their first full-length production. Fuelled by a love for stories that explore queer identities and relationships, moral dilemmas, and the beautifully fragile complexities of human relationships, Kiara is always on the lookout for projects that dig deep into what it truly means to be human. Kiara aims to direct bold new works that challenge form and genre (and blur the line between naturalism, surrealism and expressionism), with a unique interest in queer and feminist perspectives that challenge audiences to think, feel and question – sometimes all at once. With a keen eye for discipline, detail and a passion for safe and comfortable collaboration, Kiara is just getting started, and they're eager to continue pushing the boundaries of theatre and film in new and exciting ways.
