Nouveau-Mexique, fin du XIXe siècle : Temple Jeffords, self-made man, dirige de main de maître son immense domaine, « Les Furies ». Un jour, sa fille Vance lui succèdera. Mais lorsque Temple rentre d'un voyage accompagné de Flo Burnett, sa nouvelle conquête, la tension monte. Cette dernière fait tout pour évincer Vance qui finit par la défigurer lors d'une dispute. Son père la force à quitter la maison, mais elle compte bien se venger…
