地球上の植物が絶滅状態となり、わずかに残った木々や生きものたちが「植物保存計画」により土星軌道上の宇宙船のドームで育てられていた。ある日、地球から、計画を中止し、ドームを爆破、帰還せよとの指令が届く。植物学者のローウェルは、植物を絶滅させる指令に耐えられず、反乱を起こす…。
