1841年、ニューヨーク州サラトガのソロモン・ノーサップは自由黒人のヴァイオリニストだった。彼は妻と子供2人と順風満帆な生活を送っていた。ある日、彼は二人組の男たちから金儲けができる周遊公演に参加しないかと誘いを受けた。ある晩、二人組の男たちにノーサップは薬漬けにされ、昏睡したまま奴隷商に売られることとなった。彼は自分は北部の自由黒人だと主張するが、材木商のウィリアム・フォードに購入される。
